Public Board Meeting – May 8, 2018 Page 2 Board Motion Re Board Governance Policy 5 – Diversity, Equality and Equity: Trustee Franklin put forth a motion on the floor regarding Policy 5 – Diversity, Equality and Equity. Several trustees voiced their passionate support for the motion which refers to the Sexual Orientation Gender Identity (SOGI) directive by the Ministry of Education including SOGI 123 resources available for use in the schools as well as the boards commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all learners in our schools. It was proposed by R. Franklin seconded by J. Kerr and CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY:
THAT The Board of Education directs the Superintendent to continue to promote an inclusive and safe educational environment for all students, as outlined in School District 72’s Board Governance Policy 5 Diversity, Equality and Equity, by implementing the Minister’s Sexual Orientation Gender Identity (SOGI) directives including SOGI 123.
Timeline 2016 July 25 – THE BC Human Rights Code is modified with the addition of “gender identity or expression”. 2017 July 1 – Ministry of Education policy gives approval of Learning Resources to local Boards of Education. Quoting from the Ministry’s policy on learning resources, “The Ministry of Education no longer conducts evaluation processes to recommend learning resources. This responsibility now rests with boards. Board policies and procedures should include a process for ensuring the list of recommended learning resources is up to date and aligned with changes in curriculum. This would include adding and removing resources from the list.” 2018 May 8 – The Campbell River Board of Education in effect approves the teaching of gender fluidity in all classrooms, starting in kindergarten.

Board Motion Re Board Governance Policy 5 – Diversity, Equality and Equity:

Equity. Several trustees voiced their passionate support for the motion which refers to the
Sexual Orientation Gender Identity (SOGI) directive by the Ministry of Education including
SOGI 123 resources available for use in the schools as well as the boards commitment to
